KALAKAD THOTHATHRI VADHYAR (1 )
Kalakad ThothathriVadhyar,( K T V ) was an unparrelled example of a person in the village who due to his fine tune qualities and undomitable will to help the villagers in all possible ways excelled all others the brahmins in particular and others in general..He hails from a respectable and traditional Vedic family .He was born on 10-10-1910 and died on 23-02 -1987(lived for less than 77 years.) He had one elder brother and three elder sisters by his MotherLakshmi, who was the second wife to his father. The elder brother was Sankaranarayanan whose name I am bearing now and who was the Father of Venkateswarapperiappa ( familiarly known as Nettoor periappa in our circle.) The three sisters were Bhagavathi , Meenakshi and Rugmini.Bhagavathi was given in marriage at Bhoothappandi near Nagerkoil and the couple had two sons Sankaran and Venkateswaran. Sankarathan married Ammani ,(sister of Nettur) and begot Bata Narayanan, Nagarajan and Bhagavathi.
The second sister Meenakshi had no child by her marriage. The third sister of KTV viz Rugmini ( alias Sangu Athai) by her marriage to Kallidaikurichi Krishna Vadyar had 4 sons and three daughters who are Gopalakrishnan, Radhakrishnan,Viswanathan Jayaraman,Thailu,Lakshmi and Annam.Of the seven ,only Jayaramathan is alive now !
By first wife my grandfaher got a son and named him Venkataraman who settled himself at Thaeroor, near Nagerkoil which was his Mother's place! Upto his S S L C education ,KTV had at Thiruvananthapuram ,the capital of earstwhile Travencore Cochin State residing at his maternal uncle's house at Karamanai. .Returning to Kalakad he worked as a teacher in an elementary School nearby. But he was not happy though efficient.as a teacher. .One fine day he resigned the job ,came home ,prostrated before his Father and took him as his Guru and asked him to teach Vedas. The Father took a book taught him that day, handed over the book to him and advised him to learn by self effort. He sat beside his Guru( Father) took his words seriously and mastered Vedas in a short time from the texts avaiable in the house. The texts were all in Grantha libi. Our grandfather, his father were all great authorities on Vedas. My Mother used to tell us that the Maharaja of Pudhukkottai used to call our Grandfather, keep him in his palace for a few days to hear him chanting Vedas .and award him then and there.Side by side KTV learnt Astrology and Sasthras from experts who were proud of teaching him..At a small age he could attain prominence because of his mastery on these subjects as well as his inborn nature to help people in all possible ways .An important trait in him was to fight for justice .never being afraid of anybody whatever be the position of the opponent in case he finds the other to be at fault. His quick and correct assessment of people is an added advantage to him.
